Sir, The Bank of England’s chief economist is right that the uncertainty caused by Brexit is a leading factor dampening the mood of UK business (“Brexit uncertainty is the talk of boardrooms, says Haldane”, Sep 20). Businesses are naturally resilient and adaptable — and can be responsive to economic and political circumstances — but they need a degree of clarity. How can business leaders be expected to make decisions about future investment, recruitment or market expansion when they have no clarity on the trading conditions they will face in six months?
