Facing heightened pressure to improve public safety, San Francisco Mayor London Breed voiced sympathy with frustrated residents while defending her handling of the city’s homelessness and drug crises during a Sunday CNN report on the city's problems. The mayor said she understands how residents feel, telling an interviewer that her own car was broken into last year. In poll after poll, residents report feeling endangered by a pervasive sense of lawlessness, even as violent crime remains at its lowest level since the 1960s. Breed acknowledged those perceptions, but defended her administration’s efforts to confront persistent homelessness and addiction. “It is kind of amazing that 30 years later (homelessness) is the same symbol of our city,” he said.
