Breca Wanaka tests swim-runnersMarjorie Cook Jeff McGrath and Merv Hunger complete a swim across Stevenson's Arm at Lake Wanaka. New Plymouth adventure racers Jeff McGrath and Merv Hunger won the 54km Breca Wanaka swimrun race at Lake Wanaka on March 18, in a time of seven hours 39 minutes. The 54km race is graded as "hard" while the shorter 19.4km "sprint" course has a difficulty grading of "medium". The sprint course was also slightly longer than in 2017, but the Auckland winners Carl O'Donnell and Matt Stanford were able to knock it out in 2:20. Breca Swim Run organisers Ben de Rivaz and Hannah Grave, of the United Kingdom, have introduced a second New Zealand race to their international series.
