Breastfeeding should not be forced on womenDave Cubb, Unsplash Breastfeeding is great, for those who can. The fact a maternity consumers group - which purports to represent women's rights - thinks it's a good idea for hospitals to coerce women into breastfeeding by restricting and demonising their other option, formula, is bad enough. To be honest, I am sick of heavy-handed public health messages telling women that breast is best. Its most recent report, in November this year, found 59 per cent of women were able to do this. In Gisborne, 22 per cent of Pasifika women and 37 per cent of Māori women are still breastfeeding at three months, compared to 65 per cent of non-Māori.
