Despite Hamilton’s reputation as a spread-out city, about 60 per cent of city car trips are less than 5 kilometres – the equivalent of a 20-minute bike ride. Christel Yardley/Stuff Hamilton city councillor Sarah Thomson, together with councillor Mark Bunting, have highlighted poor driver behaviour outside schools. Reducing the number of car parks in the central city has proven effective overseas in discouraging car trips with one occupant. While building a connected cycle network in Hamilton is important, the attitude of motorists is also crucial to creating a bike-friendly city, Wilson says.
