A major 7.5 magnitude earthquake rattled Papua New Guinea Sunday, a little over an hour after another temblor hit beneath the ocean floor off Japan, not far from the place where violent shaking triggered a catastrophic tsunami almost seven years ago. Earlier, the USGS reported that a magnitude 5.6 quake struck about 40 miles off the coast of Japan at 11:38 a.m. EST. It's not yet clear the extent of any damage in Japan, although shaking was felt around Fukushima, Tokyo and other cities on the main island of Honshu. The tremors that triggered the 2011 tsunami were significantly stronger with a magnitude in excess of 9.0. The Tokyo Electric Power Company that manages the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant reported "no abnormalities found" at the nuclear facility a few hours after the quake.
