Brazil promises help on Nuclear Suppliers Group


BENAULIM, GOA: Brazil has assured India that it will work with other members of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) on Delhi’s bid for membership of the elite club.Brazilian President Michel Temer gave this assurance when he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Monday.The NSG is due to meet next month in Vienna. Temer’s India visit is his first bilateral trip outside Latin America . He will be travelling to Japan from here.Modi thanked Temer for “understanding India’s aspiration” for the NSG membership as the two countries inked four MoUs, including one on investment cooperation.At the Seoul NSG meet in June, Brazil had not opposed India’s bid for the NSG membership but it had called for a common criteria for non-NPT signatory states.Senior sources in the Brazilian government, however, indicated that Brasilia politically supports Delhi’s entry into the club.“The technical discussions on India’s entry into NSG are undergoing in Vienna. Brazil is of opinion that India’s NSG membership will contribute to global peace and stability,” a senior Brazilian official said.The Modi-Temer meet on Monday also gave to a push to defence partnership, including joint production, as India sought Brazil’s assistance in naval ship building. India, on its part, decided to assist Brazil in the area of satellites and space.
