International companies should promise to pay suppliers on time, take action to stop wage fraud, and make sure factories don’t reopen until they are secure, according to the Pay Your Workers coalition. About two months have passed since the region, which has a sizable garment and textile manufacturing industry, and southeast Turkey both experienced terrible earthquakes that claimed more than 50,000 lives. The call to action comes at a crucial time when the textile industry in Turkey starts pushing out orders and brings workers back to work. Pay Your Workers, a partnership of more than 280 unions and labour rights organisations worldwide, claims that brands including Inditex, the owner of Zara, Boohoo, and Primark all source from the impacted area. The organisation expressed fear that workers would lose their jobs or receive lower pay if companies are unable to maintain production schedules as a result of the accident and said that many firms have reopened ‘recklessly quickly’.
