Racial unrest sparked a weekend of rioting in Bradford in July 2001 as mostly Asian youths clashed with police. Among the nearly 300 people sentenced for their part in the violence, was an Asian man jailed for two-and-a-half years for throwing a stone. “We were given the harshest sentences, never before had anyone been sent to jail for throwing a stone. Asian youths, who believed the authorities were protecting the neo-Nazis rather than them, clashed with police. The next night youths from the mainly white Ravenscliffe estate went on the rampage attacking Asian-owned businesses.
