“No man stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child” — Abraham LincolnCalgary lost its longest serving boxing coach recently, as Kevin McDermott of the Calgary Boxing Club, formerly National Boxing Club (est. As a founding member of National Boxing Club in 1978, formed by Mansoor Esmail, Kevin began his journey of nearly 40 years as a coach in the early ’80s. Even my last few amateur fights in 1986 were guided by McDermott and Esmail during my brief stint at then-National Boxing Club. The Calgary Boxing Club will remain — I’m certain Brown, Wyatt, William Terry Coveney, Marty Burton, Rory Coveney, Roger Redoble and many other key figures have already thought about the next steps. And they will at least have a near-lifetime’s worth of wisdom from Coach McDermott to relay to the next generation.
