Walt Disney and LucasfilmWhat was presumed heading into the weekend is now official today. Walt Disney’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi has crossed $1.31 billion mark at the global box office, including $700m overseas. and then is going to lose many screens on Feb. 16 thanks to Early Man and Walt Disney’s Black Panther. Does this mean that Solo: A Star Wars Story won’t disappoint (whatever that means for a stand-alone Star Wars prequel opening over Memorial Day weekend) or that Episode IX won’t take a downturn from Episode XIII? And those highlight how hard it has been for Disney to create new hits outside of the MCU/Lucasfilm/fairy tale sandbox.
