Universal and Chiabella JamesThere was a time when a big-budget Mummy movie starring Tom Cruise and co-starring Russell Crowe would have been a contender to be the biggest movie of the summer, if not the year. The Mummy, the first film in Universal/Comcast Corp.’s “Dark Universe” franchise, earned $12.028 million on Friday, including $2.7m in Thursday previews. As I’ve discussed many times, Cruise’s peak era was a time when a $15 million opening weekend was great, a $100m+ domestic total was a win and a $250m worldwide cume was a triumph. If the film plays like Oblivion ($13m Friday/$37m weekend) or Edge of Tomorrow ($10m Friday/$28m weekend), we can expect and over/under $34 million debut weekend. So yeah, all told, we could be looking at a $165-$175m worldwide opening weekend, which is arguably pretty good.
