The $125 million-budgeted film earned a strong $141.8m outside of North America since its Tuesday debut. Yeah, it stumbled in India, but we’re still looking at a $170m worldwide debut weekend, which is a personal best for its star. This again shows that audiences don’t care if a movie is connected to an expanded universe if said movie isn’t good or doesn’t look good. And, like Terminator: Genisys two years ago, making big overseas bucks isn’t enough if the movie isn’t very good and folks aren’t jazzed for what comes next. The well-reviewed (79% fresh, and an average critic ranking of 6.6/10) drama is helmed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite (Blackfish) but earned just $3.767 million over its debut weekend.
