While Walt Disney's Thor: Ragnarok opens in North America a week from tonight, it began its slow overseas roll-out on Tuesday. Those following along will know that Marvel has done this kind of staggered release for their comic book superhero movies since Iron Man 2 back in 2010. Nonetheless, the Thor franchise has never quite had the comparative muscle of the Iron Man films or the Captain America movies. So, the question is whether Thor: Ragnarok can give Marvel its third $800m+ global grosser in just over six months. That’s obviously not the bar for success for the $180m-budgeted actioner, but it would make a nice milestone for the Tony Stark-free Thor sequel.
