With decent reviews and solid buzz, The Wandering Earth should continue to dominate over the very near future. Directed by Frant Gwo, based on Liu Cixin’s short story and starring Wu Jing (who headlined the Wolf Warrior movies), The Wandering Earth offers a kind of straight-faced hybrid of Armageddon, The Core, Gravity and Interstellar. The story concerns the world uniting together when the sun expands into a red giant phase and threatens to scorch the Earth. Meanwhile, the people of Earth have moved into underground cities where they will be protected when the Earth freezes over during the 2,500-year journey. We'll see if The Wandering Earth can keep up the pace and flirt with Mermaid numbers (let alone Wolf Warrior 2 numbers), but it is the first successful shot in China's own box office space race.
