Adjusted for inflation, the $10 million opening of Every Which Way But Lose 40 years ago next weekend would be around $41m. If The Mule can top $18.1m for the weekend, it’ll best Space Cowboys as Eastwood’s second-biggest debut weekend ever as an actor behind Gran Torino's $29m wide launch. And so the $100 million-budgeted flick, which earned $25m overseas heading into the weekend, made just $2.82m for what should be an $8m opening weekend. Expect a $2.3 million weekend. Whether it can translate critical acclaim into long-term box office (and Oscar nominations) is an open question, but it’s off to a good start.
