Having said that, Paramount/Viacom Inc.'s Rings is underwhelming partially because Universal/Comcast Corp.'s Split turned out to be such a big deal. Rings was the top movie on Friday, even if it probably won't win the weekend, with $5.64 million on its opening day. Super Bowl weekend is actually a pretty solid frame for horror films (The Messengers, The Woman in Black, When a Stranger Calls, etc. But The Comedian was received about as well as Gold, so cue a $325k Friday and an over/under $950k opening weekend. And Sony released the Chinese blockbuster Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back into 66 theaters this weekend.
