Sony’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter was something of a disappointment in North America, having earned just $26 million in three weeks. And yesterday it opened in China, where it earned a jaw-dropping $32.6m in a single day. That includes $2 million in Thursday previews, and we’re talking about a franchise whose prior entries (Resident Evil: Retribution and Resident Evil: Afterlife) made just $17m in China back in 2012 and $21m back in 2010. Anderson video game movie has the potential to take the grindhouse action picture from a merely solid worldwide total to over $300m. And it will be the second “big” movie in a month that belly-flopped in North America but became a gonzo hit thanks to China.
