Box Office: 'Peter Rabbit' Has Become A Stealth Smash Hit

SonyWhile most of the headlines over the film's domestic opening weekend concerned controversies over food allergies and questions about source fidelity, Peter Rabbit has become a very sturdy hit over the last month. But while the T'Challa flick has done real damage to the other would-be tentpoles of the season, the smaller-scale, explicitly kid-targeted Peter Rabbit has quadrupled said debut weekend for a $100m+ domestic total. Black Panther plays to almost every quadrant, but Peter Rabbit was sound counterprogramming for kids too young for a 140-minute, PG-13 action drama. Sure, I wish folks who took their kids to Peter Rabbit also took their kids to Paddington 2, especially in North America. And as I noted in my initial review, if Paddington 2 is worthy of comparisons to Babe, then we should also note that Peter Rabbit is a heck of a lot better than Gordy.
