Universal and LegenadaryUniversal/Comcast Corp.'s Pacific Rim: Uprising got off to an okay start on Thursday night, earning $2.35 million in preview grosses in advance of its nationwide debut this morning. For comparison, the original Pacific Rim earned $3.6m in its Thursday previews on the way to a $14.6 million Friday and a $37m debut weekend. So, yeah, there clearly was an audience for a Pacific Rim sequel in the second-biggest (soon to be biggest) moviegoing marketplace on Earth. Now that doesn't mean that Pacific Rim: Uprising, which also stars Cailee Spaeny, Tian Jing, Scott Eastwood and Rinko Kikuchi (among others), is a hit. And, at a glance, we may be looking at an over/under $25 million debut weekend in North America, which points toward an under-$70m domestic total.
