Blumhouse and Universal/Comcast Corp.'s acclaimed/buzzy thriller overperformed last weekend with a $40 million debut weekend, basically the biggest "not based on anything" horror debut since Cloverfield back in 2008. And now it's having a remarkable, especially for a horror film, hold in weekend two as word-of-mouth takes hold. Yes, STX's The Boy fell just 29% on weekend two last year, but that was off a $10 million debut weekend and partially due to a major storm over the film's debut weekend. The film's second weekend will be about as large as the $25 million opening weekend of The Visit. As a fan of the filmmaker and as a champion of multiplex horror films, this is an incredibly encouraging development.
