Legendary and Warner Bros.Back in 2005, Peter Jackson’s King Kong got sandbagged by, of all things, overwhelmingly rave reviews. That’s a far cry from Godzilla’s $38 million opening day (including $9.3m in Thursday previews) back in May of 2014. The good news is that the 1970’s-set Vietnam-based adventure is earning mostly solid reviews and I would expect decent word-of-mouth. So yeah, I’m officially calling dibs on “Beauty killed the Beast” headlines next weekend if Skull Island doesn’t hold up. But the notion of a big-budget King Kong movie is a lot less special than it was in 1976 or even 2005.
