Box Office: Johnny Depp's 'Pirates 5' Breaks Walt Disney's Memorial Day Curse - News Summed Up

Box Office: Johnny Depp's 'Pirates 5' Breaks Walt Disney's Memorial Day Curse

The fifth Pirates movie crossed $600 million worldwide this weekend at the global box office. To wit, the Johnny Depp sequel has earned $464.4m overseas, which means the picture has earned 77% of its total overseas. So, yeah, Pirates 5 will soon be summer's biggest overseas champion, even with disadvantageous overseas exchange rates. But the relative success of this Pirates sequel, allegedly the final chapter if the marketing tells no lies, also means that Disney finally has another successful live-action Memorial Day release. As I noted in the run-up to the opening, Walt Disney hadn't had a successful Memorial Day weekend offering since Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End way back in 2007.
