The lowest opening for an X-Men movie thus far is The Wolverine, which debuted with $53 million in August of 2013. In terms of inflation, Dark Phoenix would have to open above $61 million to avoid being the “fewest-tickets-sold” debut for an X-Men movie. And if it really does open with “only” $50 million, Dark Phoenix will have to contend with the fact that ensemble X-Men movies are among the most frontloaded of the major franchises. So, fair or not, Dark Phoenix needs as big of an opening weekend as possible because that may make up the relative majority of its money. Still, a $50 million weekend means the X-Men finale is far more likely to close out at $125 million than $150 million.
