Box Office: 'Baby Driver' Is More Important To Sony Than 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'

Sony legged that one to $101m domestic on a $32m budget, I think Baby Driver may do a little better overseas than that film's $24m foreign take. Unless the word-of-mouth and rave reviews mean absolutely nothing, Baby Driver is going the distance. that did good-to-great business overseas, but the North American box office has stymied them for (at least) this entire year. The last thing Sony wants to be is a studio that can only score with somewhat preordained IP like Spider-Man: Homecoming. But as a non-tentpole hit in a tentpole world, being able to make Baby Driver into a hit is as valuable, if not more so, to a studio than a surefire biggie like Spider-Man: Homecoming.
