Walt Disney and Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil earned just $36 million in North America but a noticeably better $117 million overseas launch for a $150 million global debut. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil topped the box office this weekend, but it’s another example of how rank can be arbitrary if the raw numbers aren’t big enough. As feared, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil became the latest victim of the “five-years-later” sequel curse. The good news is that it earned $117 million overseas, including $22 million in China and $10 million in Russia, for a $155 million global opening. Still, I’m willing to presume that Jolie’s Maleficent movie is a bigger overseas draw than Alice Through the Looking Glass or Dumbo.
