Botswana starts power exports

0Mpho TebeleGaborone - Botswana has started exporting power to other Southern African Development Community (sadc) countries, the state-run power utility, Botswana Power Corporation (bpc), has revealed. “For the first time, BPC is exporting power to the sub-region of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP),” said an elated BPC Chief Executive Officer, Stefan Schwarzfischer. Botswana’s reliance on other countries to supply and connect it to power is now a thing of the past following the ongoing construction of the North West Transmission Grid Connection Project, BPC said. In 2016, official figures showed that the power capacity shortfall of the region stands at over 8,000MW, while SAPP members planned to commission only 2,763MW of power this year. The members of SAPP established the common power grid to create a common market for electricity in the region.
