Crucially, Northern Ireland will leave the EU customs union alongside the UK but will remain temporarily aligned on single market rules for agriculture and industrial goods. Number 10's new proposals will effectively do away with the backstop, and have been dubbed: “Two borders, for four years." EU leaders were briefed about the PM's plans today and it will be officially unveiled in a detailed proposal on Wednesday. "Let's get Brexit done on October 31 so in 2020 our country can move on."
