Over the last two hundred years many prime ministers have faced deep party splits or rebellions aimed at removing them from office. From Robert Peel to Theresa May, some have struggled with intense debates over policy. Chamberlain and Eden were forced out over catastrophic mishandling of foreign affairs. Margaret Thatcher was brought down by the policies of her third term and the accumulated discontents from over a decade in power. It will be no consolation to Boris Johnson, a student of history whatever his faults, that his predicament has no precedent.
