But Mr Johnson insisted his Brexit deal said the does not pose any threat to Northern Ireland's position in the UK. He said the Northern Ireland Protocol in the agreement required both sides to use their "best endeavours" to ensure there is free trade between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. "It is clear that Northern Ireland is part of the sovereign territory of the United Kingdom. But he insisted the EU is implementing the Northern Ireland Protocol in a "grossly disproportionate and unnecessary" fashion.
