Border now a ‘significant barrier’ to women fleeing domestic abuse, report finds

Abusive men are able to trump “significant” child-protection concerns and win custody of children because of confusion and issues with the Irish Border, a report has found. It also found the legacy of paramilitary organisations in Northern Ireland is complicating efforts to challenge violence against women and girls. The National Women’s Council (NWC) and Women’s Aid Federation NI (WAFNI) have today published the ‘North South Co-operation to Tackle Violence Against Women’ report. It is the first time the women’s rights organisations on both sides of the Border have been brought together. The report said the “lasting impact” of the conflict in the North “complicates” efforts to tackle violence against women and girls.
