Border dispute has Ethiopia, Eritrea on edge

Tsorona - "You can't see Ethiopia from here, but it is just behind the mountains," says an Eritrean woman, pointing a gnarled finger off into the distance. The demarcation ruling by an independent frontier commission in The Hague in April was supposed to have been final and binding on both sides, but now the border is in dispute again. In September, Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi rejected the boundary commission's ruling in a letter addressed to the UN Security Council. Afeworki also appealed to Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to prevail on Ethiopia to accept the boundary agreement. They are among the 4 200 UN soldiers patrolling the 1 000-kilometre border in what is known as a temporary security zone.
