The relative successes of Book Club, I Feel Pretty and Overboard, as well as the bigger break-out wins of (offhand) Girls Trip and Bad Moms, offer evidence that the major studio, star-driven chick flick or rom-com can succeed when Hollywood makes and markets them accordingly. The other big factor is the general cultural disdain for the chick flick or female-led romantic comedy. We’re at a point where movies like Book Club are just as rare as was The First Wives Club in 1996 and movies like I Feel Pretty or Overboard score at least partially because they are the modern-day equivalent of the old-school chick flick.
