At the very time Ontario’s auditor general was critiquing Doug Ford’s government for failing to protect people from COVID-19, members of her own staff were condemning Bonnie Lysyk for allegedly putting them in harm’s way in mid-pandemic. What happens if an auditor responds only to the questions she wants to answer, and ducks the ones she doesn’t like? Facing staff concerns, the auditor’s office initially granted a number of medical and family exemptions and accommodations. Medical exemptions were authorized on a case-by-case basis, they say, with those citing immunocompromised family members required to produce extensive documentation. But many of those medical exemptions were rescinded by August, with family exemptions largely rolled back in September, the sources say.
