It was fitting and uplifting that the final wicket of a wonderfully intriguing Test match fell to Somerset’s Jack Leach. Ignored for a time by England’s selectors and then hampered by injury and misfortune last summer, after finally making his debut the winter before, Leach pounced on a return catch from Malinda Pushpakamara to drive England to a rare series victory in Sri Lanka, their first away from home for three years and their first in Asia since 2012. In the absence of the injured Sam Curran, Leach had laid the groundwork at the start of the second innings, with three new-ball wickets, without which Sri Lanka might have chased successfully to level the series.
