An off-duty pilot hitching a ride aboard a Lion Air Boeing 737 Max 8 airliner helped disable a flight-control system and stop it crashing. The crash of Lion Air Flight 610 shortly after take-off from Jakarta last October killed 189 people on board. The role of the extra pilot on the Lion Air flight was omitted from Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee’s report last November and hasn’t previously been reported. In November, after the Lion Air crash, Boeing issued an "Operations Manual Bulletin" advising airline operators how to address erroneous cockpit readings. Air crash investigators are studying the Ethiopian Airlines plane’s flight ‘black box’ flight data recorders recovered from the crash site.
