However, it seems highly unlikely that San Francisco can contend. Posey, 32, is hitting .229/.308/.357 with one home run in 21 games this season while making a team-high $22.1 million. The Giants are also paying Mark Melancon $14 million to pitch the seventh inning in the third season of a four-year, $62-million contract. The 34-year-old was signed to be the closer but has recorded just 14 saves for San Francisco as arm injuries have reduced his effectiveness.
