Stuff reporter Joanne Carroll was walking her dog along the beach near Paroa, south of Greymouth, just after 3pm on Tuesday when she found the metre-long shark. SUPPLIED Blue sharks are not a protected species, but expert says there's no reason to only take the animal's tail. Department of Conservation marine scientist Clinton Duffy said blue sharks were not a protected species and were common bycatch for fishing crews around New Zealand.
