The Royals were certain because they had been studying the Jays intently for more than a month, just as the Jays had studied the Royals in what’s known as advance scouting. Advance scouting is totally different than scouting a player for the draft or a trade. “You’re really in a micro-analysis of what they’ve done lately,” says Ryan Mittleman, who manages the Jays’ advance scouting department. That’s the immediacy of advance scouting. “We’re constantly evaluating our own club to make sure that we’re not easy to advance,” Mittleman says.
