The Blue Jays filled the five remaining holes in their 40-man roster with a handful of pitchers Tuesday night, protecting the handful of arms from next month’s Rule 5 draft. Jays prospect Trent Thornton, acquired Saturday from the Astros, was added to the 40-man roster before Tuesday night’s deadline. General manager Ross Atkins has made it clear that pitching is an area where the Jays plan to improve for 2019. Thornton arrived the Houston Astros on Saturday in exchange for versatile infielder Aledmys Diaz. The right-hander hasn’t pitched in the big leagues, but is expected to factor into the Jays’ rotation plans next year.
