Blow as International Agencies, Embassies Relocate from Ethiopia to Kenya

After urging its citizens to leave the war-torn Ethiopia, western countries and international agencies have started relocating their offices to neighbouring Kenya. The move could be a huge blow to Ethiopia’s economy which is already battered by the protracted Tigray war and the Covid-19 pandemic. The exit of international organisations will continue to hurt the economy, which was growing at 10 percent before the war broke out. These include UNDP, FAO, IFAD, International Labour Organisation, IOM UN Immigration, International Trade Centre, Economic Commission for Africa and The United Nations Environment Programme. Others include UN-Habitat, UN Women, UNAIDS, UN Capital Development Fund, UNESCO, UNICEF, UNHCR, Japan International Cooperation Agency, International Committee for Red Cross and ActionAid among others.
