Blood Weddings still compelling second time around: review

It’s evidence of that success that the production is back again in Soheil Parsa’s original staging; revivals in the independent theatre sector are rare. The 2015 premiere of this co-production by Modern Times Stage Company and Aluna Theatre was a big hit, winning six Dora and two Toronto Theatre Critics awards. The visual and sonic world created by designers Trevor Schwellnus and Thomas Ryder Payne is beautiful and compelling. Schwellnus’s set is a series of translucent glass-paned walls arranged in a tier making a V-shape opening toward the audience. While the style and colour scheme of Angela Thomas’s costumes ably signal this shift, more performance style and design cues would have been useful in helping the audience read this change.
