That might be the definitive mark of a Truss speech, in fact. But unlike Johnson, Truss is not at heart a pure people pleaser. In fact, compared to Johnson, Truss is something of an ideologue. In her acceptance speech on Monday, Truss extolled values that in fact seemed politically perpendicular to the times. Like Sunak, Truss will conduct the pinnacle of her political career in times that call for Conservatives to abandon some of their principles and act with a modicum of practicality.
