Jan Van Dijk arrived in the seaside town of Blackrock in 1954 from Holland to help set up a tomato-growing enterprise and never went home. Van Dijk, who was 17 at the time, came from a family of commercial growers. I was from a city and at first I thought I would like to return to the city.
