About two dozen Black Lives Matter Toronto protesters have blocked off the driveway of the Special Investigations Unit headquarters in Mississauga to protest the death of Ottawa man Abdirahman Abdi and call for more police accountability. The protesters, who arrived in front of SIU headquarters at 5090 Commerce Blvd. Eyewitnesses said the officers used unnecessary force against Abdi and beat him to the point of death. The SIU, an independent provincial body that investigates cases of death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault involving police, has taken over the case. However, many members of the black community are skeptical of how effective SIU investigations are, BLMTO steering committee member LeRoi Newbold told the Star.
