That “upgrade” is actually a powerful psychological sales tool that could prevent you from comparison shopping – or contemplating whether you need a new device. In five experiments they asked a total of approximately 1,000 people whether they would be interested in upgrading a free app or to upgrade their phone. The results showed people were quite likely to upgrade (37% chose to upgrade or rated their interest to upgrade as 5 out of a 7-point scale.) The first study featured upgrading Apple’s popular iPhone apps – something participants already had, such as Words with Friends or Dictionary.com.
