Ergots form from the fungus Claviceps purpurea and occur in summer when the scierotia develop on the seedheads of many grasses and cereals. During the entire war years (from 1939 to 1945) she attended Onekaka School. The building and grounds are now the local community hall and domain, where the memories came flooding back for her.
