Heavy fighting on land and air broke out between Israel and the United Arab Republic today [June 5] and spread from Israel’s southern Negev desert to the holy city of Jerusalem. Cairo Radio called on the Arab forces to “attack, destroy and liberate Palestine”. Cairo said Israel had started the ‘war’ by launching ground and air attacks early to-day [June 5]. It said Israel’s air strikes were launched on several U.A.R. military airfields and in the Suez Canal area, and on an airbase in the Cairo area.
