ADDIS ABABA – Birtukan Mideksa is resigning from her post as chairperson of the National Elections Board of Ethiopia (NEBE). In a statement today, chairwoman Birtukan announced that she will be voluntarily stepping down on July 8. Per the chairperson, the goal, since joining the board and eventually confirmed by the parliament, was to make the board capable of holding elections independently and responsibly. Birtukan said she along with board members and colleagues worked hard to achieve this, and to respond to the support political parties needed from the board. The chairwoman has extended her gratitude to the government, public and members of the parliament for allowing her to serve.
