More recent discussions about birth control based on social media have been driven by two recent books and subsequent media appearances by the authors. “In the Flo” by Alisa Vitti published in 2020 and “This is Your Brain on Birth Control” published in 2019 by Sarah Hill. Vitti’s biography claims that she founded the app after being diagnosed with PCOS and struggling with hormonal birth control, which caused serious negative side effects. Her book and various speaking engagements are hugely popular, especially in online spaces critical of hormonal birth control. This overlap draws into question the motivations of Femtech companies advertising apps based on “natural birth control” and as a result viral online critiques of hormonal contraception.
